Uniform power tariff applied to whole country: Gilani directs ministry



Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Thursday asked the Ministry of Water and Power to ensure that uniform tariff, both during peak and off-peak hours, is applied to the whole country.

He also directed the Ministry of Water and Power and Wapda to ensure that peak hours are widely publicized to encourage conservation of electricity.

Gilani congratulated the meeting that the PC-I of Diamir-Bhasha Dam has been approved by the CDWP today. The project costing $12.6 billion would produce 4500 Mega Watts of electricity with a storage capacity of 8.1 Million Acre Feet water.

Chairman Wapda informed the meeting that this is the first storage dam to be built since 1978 when Tarbela dam was made. He said that both Mangla and Tarbela dams have lost 31 percent of storage capacity due to silting. He also told the meeting that bids have been called for short listing of civil contractors and work on the project would start next year.

He also directed the concerned authorities to ensure that all the affectees of the project are settled near the dam's lake where model villages and new townships containing all the basic civic amenities would be set up.

The Prime Minister thanked the NWFP Cabinet for supporting Asif Ali Zardari in the recently held presidential election.

Gilani also said that the support price of wheat would soon be increased for encouraging production and attaining self sufficiency in wheat.

He further said that the US government has been clearly told that there would be no compromise on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Pakistan.

The Prime Minister was talking to the NWFP Cabinet, who called on him at the PM House this morning. Chief Minister NWFP, Ameer Haider Khan Hoti also attended the meeting.

The Prime Minister said that Pakistan would not allow any foreign force to hit targets in Pakistan because such strikes prove counter-productive.

He emphasized upon the need for greater intelligence sharing and better coordination between the security forces of Pakistan, the US, Nato and ISAF.

He also apprised the participants of his meeting with US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Michael Mullen.

He said the war against terrorism and extremism is in Pakistan's own national interest because peace and stability is a must for the economic development of the country.

Minister for Finance, Naveed Qamar, Minister for Water and Power, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Deputy Chairman Planning Commission, Secretary Water and Power, Secretary Finance, Chairman Wapda and senior government officials also attended the meeting.
