Grenade blast at party office in Indonesia's Aceh: official

BANDA ACEH ( 2008-09-17 14:29:44 ) :A grenade blast damaged an office of a political party of former rebels in Indonesia's Aceh province, a party official said on Wednesday.

The pre-dawn blast damaged computers, furniture and files in the office of the Aceh Party of ex-Free Aceh Movement (GAM) fighters in Bireun town in the north of the province, local party head Tengku Darwis Jeunieb told AFP.

The grenade was thrown from the street outside the office, Jeunieb said. There were no injuries reported.

"We are very upset about this incident. This was done by people who don't want peace in Aceh," he said.

"I have called on my followers not to retaliate and stay calm because this is a threat to peace in Aceh, and we have to follow our leaders' decisions to support the peace process."

The blast comes just over a week after a similar explosion damaged the home of Aceh Party leader and ex-GAM commander Muzakkir Manaf outside the provincial capital Banda Aceh.

The attacks come as a recent report by the International Crisis Group think tank warned of heightened tensions in the lead-up to parliamentary elections next April.
